College is supposed to be a time of growth and opportunity, where young minds come together to learn the skills they need to succeed. There is, naturally, also plenty of time for wild nights out and crazy parties, but many students find a manageable balance between work and play. Unfortunately, some students follow the college party culture to dangerous extremes.
Such is the case of 11 fraternity brothers, who in October of 2021 held a “pledge father reveal” party. The copious amounts of drinking at this party led to one University of Missouri freshman being unresponsive. The alcohol poisoning has left the victim unable to walk, talk, or see.
One of the former fraternity brothers recently pleaded guilty to supplying liquor to a minor, which is a misdemeanor. He is the sixth fraternity brother to plead guilty to similar charges from this incident. This is a considerably lighter sentence than the original felony charge of life-endangering hazing. He will serve a suspended sentence of one year, and two years of unsupervised probation. According to KOMU, there are five remaining defendants whose criminal cases are still pending.
Get Help If You’re Seriously Injured
Hazing cases like this ruin lives. The Hazing Prevention Network states that 55% of college students who participate in extracurriculars experience hazing. Victims are not only saddled with a lifetime of trauma but expensive medical treatment too. Even after receiving treatment, there’s no guarantee that the victim can go back to the way their life was before. Not all hope is lost in cases like this. If you or a loved one have suffered a severe injury due to another person’s negligent actions, you could have the grounds for a personal injury case. If successful, you could receive compensation to help cover any medical expenses, recoup lost wages, or recover from pain and suffering.
In personal injury cases, it’s necessary to prove without a doubt that the careless party is responsible for your injury. In cases like this, it’s in your best interest to hire a personal injury lawyer immediately. Your attorney would take over the process of filing your claim, collecting your evidence, and communication with any relevant parties. That way, you and your loved ones can focus on your physical and mental health.
